چکیده

This study investigates the perception of English words produced by 45 native talkers presented in moderate noise to native Norwegian listeners. The relative intelligibility of individual talkers is compared with that obtained for native listeners in order to determine whether inherent talker clarity is determined by global acoustic-phonetic characteristics. Talker intelligibility was strongly correlated across native and nonnative listeners; there was also strong correlation across groups as to the lexical items most often misperceived. Word intelligibility for both was correlated with certain acousticphonetic characteristics of the talker’s productions, including amount of energy in the mid-frequency region and mean word duration.

Effects of speaker variability and noise on Mandarin tone identification by native and non-native listeners

The purpose of this study was to examine whether speaker variability and noise affect native and non-native listeners differently in Mandarin tone perception. Multi-speaker tone stimuli embedded in speech-shaped noise were presented blocked by speaker or mixed across speakers. The listeners included 20 native listeners and 33 non-native listeners with various degree of Mandarin proficiency, def...

Effects of speaker variability and noise on Mandarin fricative identification by native and non-native listeners.

Speaker variability and noise are two common sources of acoustic variability. The goal of this study was to examine whether these two sources of acoustic variability affected native and non-native perception of Mandarin fricatives to different degrees. Multispeaker Mandarin fricative stimuli were presented to 40 native and 52 non-native listeners in two presentation formats (blocked by speaker ...

Voice morphing and the manipulation of intra-speaker and cross-speaker phonetic variation to create foreign accent continua: a perceptual study

The STRAIGHT system of voice morphing was used to create voice continua of (Korean) accented Australian English, intended to simulate phonetic variation ranging from ‘heavily accented’ to ‘unaccented’ (native-like) Australian English, employing dimensions of intra-speaker and cross-speaker variation to yield a range of synthetic voices. These synthetic voices were evaluated against actual sampl...

When speaker identity is unavoidable: Neural processing of speaker identity cues in natural speech.

Speech sound acoustic properties vary largely across speakers and accents. When perceiving speech, adult listeners normally disregard non-linguistic variation caused by speaker or accent differences, in order to comprehend the linguistic message, e.g. to correctly identify a speech sound or a word. Here we tested whether the process of normalizing speaker and accent differences, facilitating th...

The Effect of Age and Native Speaker Status on Intelligibility

We investigate whether listener age or native speaker status has the biggest impact on the intelligibility of a synthetic New Zealand English voice. The paper presents findings from a speech intelligibility experiment based on a reminding task involving 67 participants. There were no significant differences in the results due to age (young and old adults), however there was for native speaker s...
